A Van Gogh painting worth an estimated $55 million was stolen from a Cairo museum on Saturday and after reporting it had been recovered, the state news agency quoted a minister as saying it was still missing.El Fazoura: Who stole it? & Why did they report finding it if they didn't?
(please don't tell me Karim Abdel Aziz and Maged El Kedwani stole it and it is hidden in Hanan Tork's Red Wedding dress ;)

It is weird, may be they thought it is the painting, but found that it is another stolen painting
توجه صباح الأحد النائب العام المستشار عبد المجيد محمود إلى متحف محمود خليل لمعاينة مكان سرقة لوحة "زهرة الخشخاش" بنفسه لمعرفة تفاصيل عملية السرقة .
وقال المستشار عبد المجيد محمود عقب المعاينة أن المتحف يوجد به 7 أفراد أمن لا يمتلكون الإمكانيات التى تؤهلهم لحراسة هذا المكان العريق وما يضمه من لوحات هامة جدا .
وأضاف أن المتحف يحتوي على 27 جهاز إنذار وكاميرات مراقبة وجميعهم كانوا معطلين اثناء عملية السرقة .
Do u think it was an inside job to transfer the painting overseas, and they were just buying themselves sometime when they claimed it was found?

u never know.. the central bank was stolen from inside..
it is weird as ahmed reported to have all of the security measures malfunctioning on that day!
لم تمر ساعات قليلة على سرقة لوحة زهرة الخشخاش من متحف محمود مختار حتى انتقل النائب العام المستشار عبد المجيد محمود إلى مقر المتحف وذلك لإجراء المعاينة التصويرية بنفسه لبيان كيفية سرقة اللوحة وملابسات الجريمة كاملة حتى وقع حادث آخر يمثل صدمة كبيرة لا تقل أهمية عن صدمة سرقة لوحة زهرة الخشاش حيث تحطم تمثال كيوبيد الموجود بحديقة المتحف وهو التمثال الذى يقدره بعض الخبراء بقيم مالية كبيرة.
وبمجرد سقوط التمثال على الأرض وانقسامه لقطعتين تجمع العشرات من العاملين بالمتحف، وبدت عليهم مشاعر الحزن مؤكدين أن ذلك التمثال هو تمثال كيوبيد الذى يمثل قيمة فنية كبيرة، مضيفين أن التمثال مكانه الأصلى داخل المتحف وليس خارجه، وفى تعبير فجائى من إحدى العاملات بالمتحف قالت " إحنا خلصنا من مصيبة علشان تطلع لنا مصيبة تانية؟".
وعلى الفور بدأ أحد المسئولين عن المتحف باستدعاء أحد القيادات الأمنية لتحرير محضر عن الواقعة، فيما أجرى آخرون اتصالا بمكتب وزير الثقافة فاروق حسنى لإبلاغه بالواقعة أيضا
hi everybody,although it is very important but I guess this painting is not the only thing that had been stolen from egypt. I think there are a lot of other treasures that may worth billions, but the difference is that nobody knows about them :(
As for the 1st question: for me, it seems like an inside job because who else know about the weak security measures as this robbery, or at least someone from inside helped in faciltating access for international gangsters. As for the second question: no idea. Maybe I wrong in my assumptions but I wonder whether investigation shall reveal the myth or not.
