342) Is it hard for us to have a Clean Hajj!

Other than the great feeling of satisfaction, and happiness in Hajj. There were some stuff that were really annoying. On the top of which comes the sanity & garbage problem.

I am just wondering if Hajj was an obligation on Europeans and organized by Germany, would it be that chaotic, messy, and dirty. Saudi organizers collected 15,000 TONS of garbage in the Eid days only, other than Arafat, Mecca, & Mozdalifa! In the last couple of days the smell of garbage in the paths of Menna were like the smell of pollution in Cairo! No wonder that most of us are sick when we are back or even before.

I hope that one day I can see a CLEAN and Human communication and attitude between Muslims specially in the Holy lands where we should be at our best!

I am back from the best trip I have ever been to in my life. I miss you all :)

I very much recommend Hajj to anyone who has the ability and still thinking about it. I am coming back as another much better person on all levels (except weight gain as we ate a lot, but working on it).

335) Respect Others' Believes!

I totally believe that in order to live in peace, we should respect others believes even if it contradicts with ours. We are not in a place to judge others, this can only be done by God the Almighty.

There is a restaurant in Cairo that doesn't allow Mohajabat, and another one in Heliopolis (females only!!) that doesn't allow Christians. What the hell is going on?!

I am quoting one of my intellectual friends: "I have been trying to keep an eye on this phenomenon for the past 8-10 years to try and understand what is really going on, is it Muslims being angry at Christians for some reasons (that I do not get) and hence dealing with them as سافرات، كافرات، ليس لهم دين.... or is it Christians believing they are so much "motahadeen" and that they feel the only solution for this is to delete the other from their communities, work environments, etc.."

The Bush administration is playing the dirty game of crusades, and such actions indirectly helps them in their dirty mission of "collision of civilizations" instead of "integration of civilizations".

In the last post some of you said that one of the hidden and major reasons for divorce is sex. Japan has invented a new robot that resembles the human figure, voice, movements..etc and is promoting it as the alternative wife for EVERYTHING including sex!! What I heard lately in a TV show that they are producing a male version as well and going on with the development of more smooth and natural robots!

This reminds me of AI movie where people are classified into ORGA (organic) & MECA (mechanical)...but the question is, can really a robot replace a female (or male) in bed, & can a person have a normal sex life -with the wife or husband- simultaneously or will it create problems close to sole sex acts (like masturbation)?

333) The Dark Side of Egypt III - Divorce

One of the major drawbacks of our generation is the exponential increase in the divorce rate among couples in 20s and 30s. I really dont understand what is going on and why, specially there arent actually other options than marriage in our culture.

In one week:

- one my best friends who has been married after a long love story and beautiful kids, for many years now is getting divorced, for really no reasons.

- one of the family friends is getting divorced from her husband in Dubai because she "found out" her husband is not responsible.

- third couple are getting divorced after shar el 3asal, and they were almost living together before.

As you know I wanna get married but these stuff scare me, coz these are people I know and have a lot in common. The crisis is that it is increasing day after day till it reached a scary % ( 1 out of every 5 married couples gets divorced every year, and increasing!). This is in addition to "separated" couples who will double this percentage if added to the study; i.e. it is almost a 50-50 change to have a successful marriage.

What is wrong, and how can we avoid such waste of time, emotions, money, children,...Life!

and how can you make sure that its the right person since love, family ..etc are not a gurantee for happiness.

After the City Stars fire, we need to be more cautious. I have got the following in my email this morning and thought of sharing it with you:

Early reports collected suggest thatthe use of oil-based paints were at least one of the reasons why the firecaught and spread so rapidly. Water-based paints of course are much safer than the oil-based variety. Another report suggested that some insulation in that area of the mall had been sealed by the use of a flammable tar mix. If so, perhaps this was not the best choice of materials.

Please be advised that most of the injuries were a result of two factors;smoke inhalation and panic.

1. If you are caught in a fire, stay low and make your way to the nearest exit. Stay low. Smoke rises because it is hotter than ambient air. If the opportunity presents itself, cover your mouth and nose with a damp cloth.

2. Frightened patrons injured others in the mad dash to get out of the building. Remember that panic kills. Keep your head. Remain calm. Walk or crawl to the nearest exit. Do not use elevators in a fire.

320) Choosing Job Matrix!

I was sending an email to a new dear friend yesterday to help in guiding her choosing between her offered jobs. I thought of sharing it with the rest of you:

If you are confused between jobs, you can do the choice matrix (that actually needs a session not a post) quickly keda:
1. List all criteria you see important in a job (career path, place, salary, environment….etc)
2. Put a weight for each criterion (20%, 30%...etc)
3. Give a score for each in a scale from 1 to 10.
4. Multiply the score with the weight (e.g u got 7/10 and it weights 20% then you score 14% (0.7*20%))
5. Add up the criteria’s scores.
6. Do the same thing for the other job.
7. Compare the final results, and go for the higher score!

It uses more rational flow than the direct choice or chaotic thinking, and el 2arkam mabtekdebsh :)

All my generation (Mid 70s) will surely remember our high school time hero "Raafat El Haggan" (Refaat El Gammal) or David Samhoun (Jack Biton). I used to LOVE this series, and even open the TV 15 mins earlier just in case it starts early (u know Egyptian TV timings). I really miss those days...I rarely get excited now about something, specially on TV!

By the way he died on 1982, i.e 3 years before the novel, and 6 years before the TV series.

312) The Kingdom of the Arab "Republic" of Egypt!

Since the start of history, Egypt has been ruled by a Governor, King, Wali, Sultan, Khedive...different names for a monarchy system, but since 54 years it has been ruled by a president. I was wondering when the 1952 "revolution" kicked the British out of Egypt, and kept the Kingdom for 1 whole year, why did they turned it into a republic then? and was it really the best way to rule Egypt?

Do you think that Egyptian people prefer to be ruled by a king or a president? Do they prefer a monarchy system or republican system? and Why?

P.S. I know that some of you (may be Gypo) will say and what is the difference, at the end the King and the President have absolute power, and they pass the thrown to their kids :)

Couple of days ago, i got a question about sex education specially with teens and twenties... I remembered a nice article written 2 years ago by Janice Crouse about the Sex Education thruogh introducting the sex pyramid (like Moslow hierarchy keda :) that I saw as the best answer to this controversial question..I thought I should share the part about the sex pyramid with you to see whether you agree that this is the right way to discuss sex with younger generations or not.

The foundation is "Values." Parents must communicate their values clearly, unequivocally, often and effectively. They should be confident in the knowledge that Biblical values do not go "out of style" or become out-dated. All truth is God's truth and regardless of cultural trends, values remain true and reliable compasses to guide believers through all the situations of life. Religious values of respect, dignity and honor are universal values that need to be applied specifically to sexual behavior so that our boys learn to respect and honor girls, and girls learn dignity and self-respect so that they can effectively say "no."

The second step is "Relationships." Parents must communicate the importance of establishing a relationship of trust and respect before intimacy develops. Parents need to communicate basic principles about character development, honor and individual responsibility.

The third step is "Emotions." Young people are seldom aware of just how extensive is the emotional aspect of relationships - especially when sex is part of the mix. Parents can help their children develop emotional control and teach them to analyze their feelings. Parents need to focus on helping their children separate their emotions from their judgments and to be careful in getting emotionally involved before laying a foundation of trust and respect.

The fourth step is "Consequences." People today rarely understand the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases and even those who are aware of them think that they won't get one. In a similar manner, most people think that they are "mature" and they believe that their relationships will "last forever.

At the top of the sex pyramid is the mechanics of the sexual act -- the "birds and bees" aspect. This actually should receive the least attention because it is the easiest part of sexual interaction to explain and understand, though, ironically, comprehensive sex education tends to focus on the biology of sexuality rather than the foundation on which sex is built.

The national anthem is something that should make a direct connection with your heart, and directly relate to your mind. I don't think that Beladi Beladi is valid anymore, and I strongly recommend the following song to be our new national anthem for our generation!
If you read the lyrics carefully (specially the highlited parts) and compare it with Life in Egypt, its people, and government in your mind, you will find it the best song that can replace our national anthem lyrics (but keeping the same tune of beladi beladi 3ashan bas ne7es eno nasheed watani!).

306) Dark Side of Egypt II - Mokhadarat!

I cant talk about the dark side in our generation without mentioning the scary increase of drug usage and addiction in the young (18-25) & mature youth (26-40) segments.

How many guys died from an overdose in the few couple of years? How many homes were torn apart because of addiction? How much money did the country loose on buying & healing, in addition to the waste of production time and energy? The questions are endless, and the sadness is overwhelming!!

Couple of days ago I read in Al-Ahram that 10% of the youth are drug ADDICTS, in addition to millions of users in different forms (Hash, ..etc). Imagine we have about 4 million drug addicts between 18 and 40!!

1. Why did it dramatically increase?

2. How can we contain it?

3. How can we (non-addicts) avoid it?

Even if it is not as happy as before, I still LOVE EID....everyone is happy..children at their peak...and people wake up early (ya ret tool el sana), meet, SMILE...why cant we be like that all year?!!!

My home overlooks the Eid Prayer Area, and I experience a Maseera to the Mosque (prob. the only maseera in Egypt that you can perform without being busted!)

I have always loved the Eid El Fitr more than Eid El Adha, may be because I experience Ramadan before but the other Eid comes after Hajj (which Inshaa-Allah I will be there this year)..

This year's it coincides with my little sister's birthday, so it is double feast (and tab3an double gift!)

300) The 300th Post: Supplication to Allah!

Allah does not expect perfection from us. What is expected of us is that when we make mistakes we move from the state of disobedience, return to Allah in repentance and seek refuge in the cover of mercy that He's provided for us. If we take too long and not seek refuge in the mercy of Allah and don't ask for forgiveness, our souls become used to the sins and even ruined by them.

In these Holy nights of Qadr, I ask Allah the Almighty to:

1. Grant us the pure soul (nafs) that drives us to obey Him and love doing good deeds.

2. Grant us the strong & healthy body that we can use in carrying on His duties.

3. Grant us the mature mind that drives us to develop and make a difference in this world.

4. Grant us the loving heart that drives us to care about each other and live in peace.

296) The Dark Side of Egypt I - Gawaz 3urfi!

Since I started a series called BrightSide of Egypt talking about good people and stuff in our generation, I thought of creating balance and start the DarkSide of Egypt too. Hopefully the bright side posts will outnumber the DarkSide ones :)

The first topic and one of the most serious DarkSide issues in our generation is the 3urfi Marriage where any 2 can just write a paper and keep a copy in a hypocrite way for just having sex (sorry for being blunt). It is the Quran (Al-baqara) which said that the Hypocrites will be in the lowest level in Hell (a3ozo Bellah). So even those who have a "western" boy-girl friend style are not as worse as those who are 3urfi married coz they are fooling themselves, the society, and think that they are "fooling" Allah.

I know that there are many reasons that have led to this situation including financial, economic, social, and religious awareness as well. But when you read the following part of a study, you will know why I decided to dedicate my first post about the DarkSide for it.

Continuing with this rate will not only be a problem but will be a catastrophe as it act as an avalanche that will swap many of the long-lived Egyptian characteristics along the way the least of which will be the family values.

I was, am, and will be optimistic about the future of this country. I will keep on giving my thought, time, and effort for taking part in its positive change. For those who still have hope and working or even supporting us, I am dedicating a group of posts "The Bright Side of Egypt" about young Egyptians some of them are my friends, or I know personally, or I dont know at all. What is important is that we all share the same vision of developing this country and the whole Arab and Muslim communities in-shaa Allah...

One day, when everyone can clearly see the light, you will say, these people weren't kidding, they really believed in their duty as Egyptians and as Muslims to do a positive change even -as i always say- if we didn't see it in our life time.

I am listing the people -including myself- I know personally or I have worked with, who gave, and still giving a lot of their time and effort to make our community a better place in donya and even akhra. Economic Growth Attracts Handful of Egyptians Back From Dubai

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Mohamed el-Kashashy has the kind of business experience that could help drive Egypt's economy. During six years working in brand management and marketing, he has led focus groups in Nigeria and cut business deals in Iran.

Until recently, however, el-Kashashy, like many other talented Egyptians, was sitting in an office in Dubai -- a flesh and blood example of the "brain drain" to booming Gulf economies that has afflicted Egypt for so many years.

This year, however, el-Kashashy, 28, took a small step toward reversing the trend. Attracted by the recent growth of certain sectors of the Egyptian economy, he moved back home to take a job with an international media company in Cairo.
"Egypt is on the verge of an economic boom," el-Kashashy said.

He is not alone in his optimism.
Heba el-Gabaly, a Harvard Business School graduate who worked for McKinsey & Co. in Dubai, also recently returned to Egypt to work for a financial services firm and rear her children closer to friends and family.
She said four of her 10 close Egyptian friends in Dubai also decided to come home -- mostly to jobs in financial services, consulting or telecommunications.
"The whole region is growing, and Egyptian businesses, especially financial services, are able to tap into the entire region," said el-Gabaly.

Although exact numbers are not tracked, the return of a trickle of well-trained Egyptians is a significant development for a country that ranks second to last among the world's emerging economies in keeping talented people from leaving, according to a 2006 report by the World Economic Forum.

Their return represents a small vote of confidence in Egypt's economic future and could provide local businesses with the skills necessary to take operations to the next level. That, in turn, could set the stage for sustained growth in a country where lack of opportunity helps fuel extremism.

Dr. Nihal el-Megharbel, a senior economist with the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies, said recent gross domestic product growth near 7 percent has indeed expanded opportunities for well-educated Egyptians -- who used to rely on places like Dubai for higher salaries and standards of living.

But she stressed that most of Egypt's people have seen no benefit at all from the trend, and continue to look to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other countries as their only economic hope.

"It will take some time for the trickle-down effect," she said.
Nearly three million Egyptians are believed to be living and working abroad, and remittances sent home every year are among the highest in the world, totaling more than $3 billion in 2006, according to the World Bank.

Reham Mansour, director of the career development office at Cairo University, said many students not educated at elite Egyptian institutions like the American University in Cairo still struggle to find jobs at home.

Many of them view Dubai, the business center of the Persian Gulf and home to about 80,000 Egyptians, as the most attractive alternative.
"If you give them the same opportunities, they would want to work here. But if you give them a better job, bigger salary, they would travel to Dubai," she said.

Prospects for well-paying jobs in Egypt are best in telecommunications, financial services and consulting. Many other sectors are less dynamic. And unofficial estimates put the country's unemployment rate at 15 to 25 percent, roughly twice the official rate.
Nevertheless, a growing number of well-educated young Egyptians believe the economic reforms undertaken by the current government have significantly improved the country's business environment.

The pace of reform increased markedly with the arrival of Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif in July 2004. Since then, the government has reduced income tax rates and customs duties and has begun the difficult process of reforming the banking sector by restructuring non-performing loans and privatizing state banks.

With the help of high oil prices and a surge in tourism revenue, those reforms have pushed the economy to ever-higher levels of GDP growth, reaching 6.8 percent in the fiscal year that ended in June 2006 and 7.1 percent during fiscal 2007.

The government estimates that Egypt's economy needs to grow by at least 6 percent a year to create enough jobs for the 600,000 people who enter the labor market every year.
Motazmagdy Negmeldin, a Cairo University engineering student, said most of his friends still dream of going to Dubai, Europe or the United States to earn higher salaries.
But with the economy growing, Negmeldin said he does not plan to leave.
"Together, we can make something of this country"

Couple of days ago in the weekend I was reading a long article about an expat's view about Cairo. There is a part where the writer is wondering how will Egypt survive all what it is facing inside and outside. I thought I should share it with this blog audience to discuss.

How, one wonders, will Egypt survive? Once the lead society for the whole Arab world, Egypt is now bereft of much of the intellectual and social weight it had enjoyed throughout the modern period and very little is left of its political influence.

“Political life in Egypt,” pronounced one moderate Islamist public figure, “is clinically dead and awaiting burial.” To be sure, the regime is stage managing a multitude of proposed constitutional amendments but the whole process appears aimed simply in preserving and extending the dictatorship.

The economy, we are told by the business class and their American friends, is doing just fine. But for whom: the business elite have a stranglehold on the economy that has gone beyond corruption, compressing the middle class and the impoverishing the masses. Ordinary Egyptians are exhausted. All of their efforts go into survival with little time for family or friends.

But what I have always loved most in Egypt is the unwarranted optimism, guileless generosity of spirit, and sheer joy for living that are the enduring characteristics of the Egyptian people. And there are still such moments: You feel it politically when Kefaya brings together political currents across the spectrum, from the Brothers to the Marxist left – all part of the Egyptian family as Naguib Mahfuz painted them in his classic trilogy. You sense it when the centrist Islamist al Wasat Party continues to develop its ideas and grows in influence in Egyptian civil society as an embodiment of democracy within Islam – despite a decade of official obstacles and impediments. But the immediate future seems to offer little more than prolonged immoblism and sterility.

274) Tribute to 3amo Fouad!

This day last year, we lost one of the best actors in the Arab World in all eras, El Ostazz or 3amo Fouad or Fouad El Mohandes. He was a great icon of respect, dedication, and fun on stage theatre, TV& Radio, in addition to some of the hilarious 60s movies with soul-mate Shwekar.

He was born on 6 September 1924 in Cairo. He was a son of a linguist named Zaki el-Mohandes, the Dean of the Faculty of Dar Al Oloom and a member of the Arabic language Academy of Cairo. He was my grandpa classmate and used to sit closely as they were both named Fouad (like the King of Egypt when they were born).

Fouad el-Mohandess was an amateur actor when he was young. Inspired by the plays of comedian Naguib Al Rehani during his study at the Faculty of Commerce, el-Mohandess decided to pursue a career in drama. He joined a group named Sa'a li Qalbak during its early run. In 1954, he starred in his first motion picture, Bent El Giran for Mahmud Thul-Fuqqar. However, he returned to acting as a minor character for about ten years afterwards.

The 1960s were el-Muhandes' golden age. He made some successful plays such as El-Sekerteir El-Fanni, Sayydati El-Gameela, and Hawwa' El-Sa'aa 12.Later in his career, his interest shifted back to theater, working in plays like Innaha Haqqan Aa'ila Muhtarama. At the time, he also presented a radio show called Kilmitein Wi-Bas, which was broadcast daily for years (was a great 5 mins show..just to the point).

Fouad El Mohandes was a student of Naguib El Rihani and a mentor for Adel Emam. Although Adel Emam is el za3eem and Naguib El Rihani was a GREAT actor, still Fouad El Mohandes El Ostazz who was loved by everyone.

He used to star in 3amo Fouad Fawazeer that was great in mid-80s (we were very sad when then replaced it with geddo Abdo) and again during whole 90s.

Fouad el-Mohandes died on 16 September 2006, 10 days after his 82nd birthday & a month after his life-time friend Madbouli died...Allah Yer7amo.

Yesterday I had a meeting at 10pm for the MILE organization (I am its Egypt team leader), el mohem... While I was there with my friend Sherif (Establisher) who came from UAE for just 2 days for our meetings, we suddenly found my mobile asking me if i can accept a bluetooth message from "TOTA.TOTI". I definitely rejected (waste of time, virus,..etc reasons).

Less than a min, same message appeared on my and Sherif's mobile as well..we ignored and continued the meeting...5 mins later Sherif got the message again, so he decided to accept and see...surprisingly we found message saying "momken ne3araf ;)" ...so we laughed and said meen el ray2a el fadya di (hopefully el ray2a mesh el raye2!) ....

5 mins later we got another message "ana 3ayaza ashoufak!" at this moment there were only 3 girls in cilantro and it was obvious that it was one of them specially she was starring at us all the time.. We couln't turn the bluetooth off coz we needed it.

We just ignored the whole thing and moved on with our meeting till they left. I cant believe the girls attitude, and specially in Ramadan....Feen el 7aya?

Today marks 6 years (was a Tuesday as well) since September 11th attacks in 2001. About 3,000 people died in such awful acts, but the question is, FOR WHAT?

Who won, who is the one who benefit most from these terrible attacks?

Definitely not the Arabs...and not Bin Laden....yeb2a fadel meeeen ya 7elween?!!
Tab3an George W Bush, he is the only winner (he wouldnt have been elected for a 2nd term aslan), he used the american people's sorrow and bitterness in launching a war against terrorism that totally failed. It ends up with people hating America after admiring it, Americans having less freedom than before, and people like Bin Laden are still free and doing what they want!!

262) Islamic Banking....Is it a big Myth?!

I don't like people who manipulate others and use their need to benefit while selling them the same thing in a different name....I'd categorize cigarettes and Islamic divisions in banks in the same category of fooling people and selling them something else that they advertise or claim...

From sources inside the admin of Islamic banks, the money of the Islamic division and other divisions end up all to the same destination whether investment in projects or loans. It just have a different front end for marketing purpose and attracting more segments from the market to increase their market share and profitability.

And if it is really an Islamic division, why do we allow other non-Islamic transactions and legalize it!! My opinion....it is a big myth!

P.S. I am not against something being Islamic, but against fooling people.

As mentioned in part I, & II the history of the Cairo urban area began as early as the Roman period. During the Pharaonic (3000-332 BC) and Greek (332-30 BC) eras of Egyptian history there was no town or city in the heart of what is now the Cairo area, although twenty miles to the southwest stood the great pharaonic capital of Memphis and its temples to the creatorgod Ptah, while to the northeast (located in what is now the Matariya section of Cairo) stood ancient Heliopolis, the great cult center to the sun-god Ra.

But in the Roman period there was a powerful fortified town, Babylon, on the east bank of the Nile River opposite the southern tip of Roda. This fortress was located at the strategic heart of Egypt, the dividing line between Lower (Northern) Egypt and Upper (Southern) Egypt; it also dominated the principal ford along the length of the Nile, for most caravans and armies moving east-to-west or west-to-east across Egypt skirted the edges of the Delta and made use of Roda Island as a crossing-point. The remains of the fortress of Babylon are situated in the modern Cairo region known as "Old Cairo," and it was to this site that the Arab came when they entered the country in 640 AD.

After the fall of the fortress, the Arab commander, Amr bin al-3as, chose to make the camp-city which his army had established just north of Babylon his capital. This camp-city, "al- Fustat," soon supplanted Alexandria as the demographic and economic center of Egypt, and from 700 to 1100 AD it flourished and became one of the great cities of the Mediterranean world.

But in 969 AD a dynasty centered in North Africa, the Fatimids, conquered Egypt and established a new palace city for themselves along the edge of the desert two miles northeast of Fustat; the site stood a mile-and-a-half due east of the Nile and was separated from the river by a band of swamps and lakes. The new city was "al-Qahira"Cairo: the "Victorious City"and It did not take long before the population of Fustat, attracted by the patronage available in the new royal residence, abandoned the older city and settled in the new one. By 1100 Cairo had supplanted Fustat as Egypt's most important city.

Indeed, from 1100 to 1500 Cairo can claim to have been the grandest and most splendid city in the Western world. Throughout this era its physical dimensions never exceeded five square kilometers (three square miles), and its population was never greater than 750,000 souls. However, such a total was as large or as that of any city in Europe before 1800.

260) The Wii Revolution

First time to play Wii was yesterday where we had a Wii tournament after work for Spot Local team in Hurghada....it was amazing!!

For the first time you really feel that it is a productive game where you move and feel tired, and really feel the heat of the game!!

I woke up with a sore arm after playing boxing anf Golf for the first time in my life, and feels as if I am doing it in reality!

Anyway, try Wii.com for more info and it is not very expensive for the quality and value (about 2500 LE and getting cheaper every day).

Although I really like Ahmed Mekky so much but I totally disagree to take his famous motto -(as haytham) Kabbar el D and rawa2 el G - into reality..

I cant imagine having any vision or trying to do any development in this country if I and everyone kabbarna el Demagh and just left life to pass by without any positive contribution..

I would say the best way for my satisfaction and (2arawa2 el Gomgoma) is NOT to akkabr el D!
