و فوّقت نفسى بسرعة  بشوية ميّة

نزلت الفرح و عديت على نفس الشارع

عشان أنسى اللى حصل فيّه

من الأخر خالى باكم و ماتقفوش أبدا

حتى لو دوستم حد بالعربية

دى ناس ضايعة و عن روحها مستغنيه

مايفرقش معاها إنت إبن ناس ..  و لا إبن جنّية

و على فكرة القصة دى حقيقية

فى الخليفة المأمون قُرب الإتحادية

الساعة تمانية و نص و شوية

720) Being Positive ::: Yes We Can... Save Lives !

Accidents in Egypt specially Cairo has reached a scary limit. We are loosing thousands of lives each year most of which are young people. I lost my dear cousin in an accident, and some of my friends too.. May be it is not the first time I talk about this but it is dramatically increasing and I think we must be working in parallel with the government (if they do anything about it aslan) to size it down.

For example, the driving licence requires a test but it is a fake one. Why don't we make sure that we really can drive before driving not for the sake of issuing the license but for the sake of our and others safety.

Why don't we teach our younger siblings and kids to respect the ambulance and stop to the nearest right when we hear its alarm.

Why don't we exert some more effort and have some patience to cross the street from its intersections and when the traffic light is red (now the new monitored lights are really respected by cars).

Why don't we drive on the right when we are moving slowly so that we don't get hit by someone driving fast on the left lane?

Why don't we stop holding the mobile with one hand and driving with the other?

Why don't we place the children in the back seats?

And many other stuff that we can do without a need for regulation or law, even if this will make a 10% difference, it is enough to motivate us to do it, we are talking about lives here...

I still miss my cousin and I wanna be a reason for saving someone else's cousin..

701) Taxi ... Sorry, it is for Women only !!

Why do all the signs indicate that we are heading into the separation of the society between males and females. Females cars in Metro, female queues, female hours in some services, female only restaurants (like Hanan Turk's one), and lately female only taxi (check). I wonder what else will be female only!

I am not against women having their privacy for one reason or another, but I am afraid one day - especially with the fake religious and wahabi waves invading our society- to wake up and find Cairo another Riyadh!

699) The Chronic Traffic Challenge !

Have you ever though how much does the traffic jams and problems in cairo cost us every year?

2.3 Billion Pounds (2,300,000,000 LE). Imagine!

This means that we lose an average of 4,400 LE every MINUTE of the day all over the year. Imagine if this amount is used to fund Education or Health or even helping the poor people! The weird thing is that this problem has been there for more than 40 years now and guess what it is getting WORSE!

Same traffic jams, same blocked spots, same stupidity in handling it (e.g. having a 4 lane bridge ending in a 2 lane street!!!!, and having a 3 meters wide pavement on each side for the Tram in a 10 meters wide street!)...

I stopped going out in cairo except around home or AUC, other than that. I rather stay home and get bored. (the other option will be heart attack in the street, those who have driven their cars last Monday will know what i mean).

I think Carpooling is something that we have to adopt right now, we cant wait longer for the government as it seems that they aren't serious enough about fixing this chronic problem! Any other suggestions dear readers?

Green Light is just stating the obvious, you gonna pass anyway.

Red Light is just a suggestion to stop, that you "might" consider.

615) Bright Side - Episode 3 ::: Egypt Car Poolers!

I know that I haven't added any new episodes in this series for more than a year but there weren't much to write about then. I was tempted to add a 3rd episode to this series when I found out about this good initiative and spirit. When I finish Being Yourself Series, I will try to add more episodes to the Bright Side of Egypt.. we need to see more of this side of the country...

I am glad that there are positive initiatives of young people (Hisham A.Wahab, Hind Rasid...)who made use of their brains and skills in trying to make a positive change in their society. We all know that the traffic problem in Cairo has reached a level that is beyond normal and abnormal tolerance. These young group has worked hard since summer 2008 to finally launch their website promoting Car pooling in Cairo that reduces both traffic and pollution.

I am quoting the initiator Hisham Abdel Wahab:

"For those of you who don’t know, www.egyptcarpoolers.com is Egypt’s first online carpooling community! The website aims to promote carpooling in Egypt by creating a forum where potential carpoolers can connect and coordinate rides.

On 29th Sep 2008, and because of the traffic Jams Microsoft started bus service for employees & Employees can start work from the bus itself and their office hours counts from the time they start work in the bus.

That is what I call Time Optimization!

I would like to apologize for not publishing the episode last Thursday as I was stuck in a business trip with a stupid hotel that has no idea about Internet!

Hadary: I guess this is a real life example of the right man at the right place at the WRONG time. Hadary would have been blessed by everyone if he decided to resign and leave EL Ahly in a legal way and move to Europe, even if we like to see him in Ahly. But the way he left and the timing (while Egyptians were celebrating the achievement on the same day) was really unprofessional and will cost him at least 50% of his life-time achievement. Sometimes we don't weight all the options and see all the pros and cons. I will not be surprized if I found the Egyptians saluting Hadary again when he moves to a big club and make a difference, as the emotional nature of the Egyptians can swamp anything in its way. P.S. El Ahly as well has to be more flexible with allowing its players to play for European clubs.

Alexandria: I haven't been to Alex in 14 years, and I spent the last couple of days there. I envy you Alexandrians, it is like Europe in winter, clean and wide corniche, jogging in the morning, calms people, traffic jams are bearable...imagine that it took us 2 hours to reach Cairo, and 3 hours to reach home!!!!

Today in Ahram, Salah Montasir was wondering about how serious are we in solving our major problems..

هل نحن جادون في حل مشكلة المرور والسحابة السوداء والقمامة والحفاظ علي نظافة مياه النيل؟ وهل نحن جادون في حل مشكلة البطالة والهجرة غير المشروعة‏,‏ ومشكلات التعليم بما يتناسب مع التطور العالمي‏,‏ ومشكلة أطفال الشوارع والحفاظ علي الرقعة الزراعية؟ وهل نحن جادون في محاربة الفساد خاصة في المحليات ومقاومة العشوائيات والتاكسيات القديمة في شوارع المحروسة؟ هل نحن جادون في محاربة الارتفاع الجنوني في الأسعار ومكافحة المخدرات واستغلال الطاقة الشمسية وتطوير نظام الري وترشيد استهلاك المياه وإزالة الغام الصحراء الغربية واستثمار المنطقة زراعيا وصناعيا؟

so the question is are we serious? my answer is I DONT THINK SO!
As long as everyone is waiting for others to start, as long as there are people who benefit from this situation, as long as there is no real vision, strategies, & actions... then WE WILL NEVER BE SERIOUS!

Actually one day it happened to me and he bluntly asked for money and eih he asked me to park fel mamnou3. I told him sorry I dont park fel mamnou3 coz it blocks the traffic and as a citizen I SHOULD care, but you as a policeman, you MUST care.

P.S. wana bagaded el rokhsa, la2et 3alaya mokhalfa from that day 3ashan raken fel manou3, ah ya balad!

197) Why are Egyptians so Noisy?!

I got this on my mail and thought of sharing it with you guys...I think it is worth reading and discussing...

Away from stereotypes and generalizations, why are we –Egyptians- so noisy? Why are we loud?
Down the street, at home, in a train, in a cinema, in the opera house, even in the desert!
When I say we, I don’t exclude myself and I don’t mean all Egyptians. The beeping horns, the loud music, the f__ mobile phone tones…what is it? Did we develop a “culture of noise”? Or has it always been the case?
I’m trying a naïve synopsis, and you are all invited to disagree, agree, and comment, to the end of the list:

First: Freedom & Ignorance
Given the high rate of illiteracy (let alone the decay of ethics), many Egyptians don’t even know what freedom means. They don’t know what it means enjoying their lives (sometimes, through very noisy practices) without offending or annoying others. None of us was spared a noisy street wedding or a funeral’s loudspeakers next door.

Second: Despair & Selfishness
I think there are millions of Egyptians who feel that “we’re going nowhere, we stand no chance”. If the ship is sinking anyway, then at least let’s enjoy our last hour! We will do it selfishly and noisily!

Third: Passiveness
A legacy of oppression, ignorance and absence of basic human rights fermented into a passive attitude towards everything and everyone, including those idiots who play their music at loudest, those who talk and laugh loud down every street and corner, to the end of the list.

Fourth: Heritage & the Big City
Since day one, a newborn is exposed to every form of noise that there is! Zaghareet, seboo3, loud birthdays…they grow up into a city of 18 million plus…a city of over a million cars…a city that never sleeps.

Fifth: Attention
A guy wants to impress a girl, and because he (and probably she) knows no other means to impress a lady other than money, muscle and property, he draws her attention using the common language of noise (honking, latest song, mobile ring tones, etc! You only need one train ride to experience the entire range of the mobile phone ring tones on earth…
And because I’m not a money and muscle guy, I come to realize that I am “only a voice in a city of noise” as Chris de Burgh once said! But no…Templars: We are all responsible…be positive…don’t be noisy…don’t let noise rule.

Wanna waste more than 2300 years in a month?!

Of Course I am not surprized to see Cairo on the top of the clogged cities in the world...official numbers say Cairo's population is 15 Million - not including 3ashwa2eyat and some new area if added it will reach 20 Million + people coming or commuting in the daytime...

I am afraid to just think what is Cairo gonna be after 10 years (that is not much...same distance between now and 1997!!)...According to studies Cairo will be a completely clogged city by 2020 where the average ride will be around 2 hours!!! Imagine how much time you need to go from Heliopolis to Tahrir!!! I guess you need to rent an apartment somewhere midway....

The problem other than hot weather, crowd stress...etc..is the time of the people commuting...if you multiply the hours wasted everyday by the no. of people stuck, you will be shocked...if only 1 million commute everyday (government employees only are 5 Million by the way) in cairo and they waste only 1 hour, then we have 1 million hour wasted everyday...in other words on this minimized assumption, we will be wasting about 2300 Years of production every month!!!!

Compounding the ever more horrendous noise is the variety of vehicles: autos, buses, bikes, vans and trucks on narrow streets with the use of the sidewalk almost a must. The traffic rarely stays in lanes, instead weaving its own tapestry. It is an elemental force.
