856) 7 years of Blogging :::: Where Am I today?!

Today marks the 7th birthday -my lucky number- of my blog ... yeah it has been 6 month since my last post, and that is the longest period ever I stopped publishing on my blog, but in 7 years, that is not that much time.

It was a weird feeling not to be able to express myself through writings as I used to over all these years. It was something like a mental / psychological block that kept me not able of putting any thought on paper during that period.

This is coinciding with getting into the late 30s and soonly moving to 40s, where I am stopping before a huge and massive milestone & checking not only if I am still on the right track, but if it is the right track in the first place.

I traveled to many places in 3 different continents during these 6 months, thought a lot about it, and realized that some dreams deserve to die for while other dreams are to be kept in that wonderful golden fluffy cage somewhere in your mind.

On the public front, lots of disappointments and frustrations over the last 3 years, and I still have hope that by staying in Egypt and helping in changing of the mindset of the younger generations, we can change the culture in the future ... I am still working on it, but awaaaaay from politics.
On the mental / career front, things are not going as good as it was before the revolution(s) in business, but I am still challenging myself to focus on quality not pursue money to compensate for the lost business. Yet, I had to let go of some expensive dreams and replace them with more practical ones.
On the emotional front I am still fighting and struggling to find "the best friend for the rest of my life" to be my life partner rather than settling for the increasing urge of companionship and increasing pressures from family and society. I am also getting back to physically meet my close friends in person after falling into the virtual trap for a long time and losing the taste real friendships.
On the spiritual front, although my practices are not getting any better - except on the moral part-, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, I can feel the greatness of God in everything, and I am so grateful more than ever. I am sure I will reach that level of purity I wanna reach someday ISA. I am still still struggling with the dual-faced society that focuses on the practices and looks rather than the faith and actions.
On the phyiscal front, my health is fine, and I am almost sustaining a regular workout practice to keep myself of gaining weight, get more fit, and lead a healthy life-style (I gotta be trained from now, not when I am old).

So more or less, I realized that life is a continuous non-ending struggle with myself and others, and as much as the hardships of these struggles, as much as it is the essence of its beauty till reaching my destination ... The secret is feeling grateful for what I have, ambitious about what I wanna have, and not regretful for what I haven't had.

Happy Birthday my Blog :)

854) We, Mothers, and Others !!

If I asked you : Do you really love your mother? Most probably you gonna say: Of course, are you kidding me, who doesn't?! However, if I asked a lot of Egyptians who are in their 30s or even late 20s, and still living with their mothers about the obstacles they are facing or the people whom they cant really communicate with, you will find them answering: "Of course my mother, are you kidding me, who doesn't?" and here comes the dilemma :)

The problem is that at a certain age or stage of life, we start feeling that we and our mothers are living in the same place but in a different dimension where even words have different meaning and interpretation for each. The challenge or the inner fight comes because we do love our mothers so much for all what they did and still doing for us, but at the same time we feel the extreme need for independence and being in full control of our decision regardless of how other people will see it (and that is something mothers do care a lot about ...

Although I don't have a certain solution for such problem, but let's agree on some of the facts
about Mothers:

  • They love us more than we love ourselves.
  • They are trying to do what they think will make us happy.
  • They rarely listen to us.
  • They do listen to others a lot.
  • They wont change no matter what.
  • They need our love and care at this stage as much as we need it from them or even more.
Hence, I guess the way out is:

  • To give them extreme care and love, all the time.
  • Avoid debating about minor stuff that will just waste energy and time.
  • Talk with them about one topic at a time without revealing differences as much as pointing out similarities.
  • Focusing on end results -that may be common- rather than the process -that may be controversial.
  • Make them feel that we still need them a lot and they can count on us at the same time..
  • If you can afford, move out till you get married (if you will ever do).
God bless our mothers, and give us the patience to keep them satisfied..

836) My Year of Extremes .. !

So, it is my birthday again (tomorrow the 27th) ... A whole year has passed with all its beautiful, hot, ugly, and sad moments. It deserves to be called the Year of Extremes ..

The year of hope, the year of despair ..
The year of love, the year of hate ..
The year of bonding, the year of break-up ..
The year of honor, the year of disgrace ..
The year of success, the year of failure ..
The year of courage, the year of fear ..
The year that changed me deep from within ..

That last year wasn't a year, it was many years combined ...
Another year is starting and challenging me with new goals, ideas, and resolutions..The good thing that I am starting my new year with feeling more like a mature man; confident, loving himself and others, and deeply believe that he still can make a difference.

So I am wishing myself a Happy Birthday :)

* * *

* * *

817) The Revamping Generation !

I have always hated following other steps without re-thinking about why did they do it, how, and what are the other options. Although I tend to be a very organized person but I do question all traditions, systems, and norms. May be that is why till now I still can not feel fitting in our society although I have been living in Egypt for most of my life.

I feel that sometimes we do exaggerate about our traditions and put some taboos and concerns without even questioning it. You may say that is different in the new generation, I'd say yes to an extent. However,   the majority are still adoring the "group-think" style where everyone if following what is there without not even questioning is it the best thing to do or not.

That is clear on the social, cultural, and even on the economic and political levels..

On the socio-cultural level people tend to consider the traditions are sacred even if it become a show-stopper or create a bottle-neck. Check marriage and the copy and paste procedures and problems, education and its copy cats graduates, entertainment, tv programs...etc.

On the Economic level, we have this tendency of copying the success without assessing why did they succeed and is the surrounding environment and our capabilities are suitable to repeat theirs or not (you can find a whole street selling the same commodities just because one or two shops were successful at a certain point in time). Also, the tendency to save in banks and not do any investments or take risks, the tendency to buy very low quality product many times instead of buying a better durable one that have the same life span, the tendency to spend money without any balance or relativeness with income to show off (like Mobiles), or own mood (Cigs or Drugs)..etc.

Even now on the political level, people just go with the flow ... Of course people have the free right to choose and select, but do they really do? Does everyone for example selecting Abou Ismail, is really doing so because he or she are convinced of Abo Ismail and his values, vision, and strategies? I have checked all the referendums in Egypt in the last 100 years, and we never said NO, not even once.. and the highest percentage a No got was like these days last year (22.8%). The rulers of Egypt know this and always play on that line of thought.

What I wanna say is that Jan 25th Revolution has been losing on many fronts, but if we take a deeper look we can see that there is an important factor that everyone has been ignoring ... THE REVAMPING of all our norms and traditions ... The younger generations (below 40) and specially university students are coming up with different values that are much more powerful than their parents and elders... SCAF, Ekhwan, may seem winning now, but who will conquer the future.. who is leading the change .. Who will be there to witness in the first place... It is these young generations. My bet is on them, and I will be putting my effort and time in supporting my, and the younger generation to be able to lead and change this country on the medium and long terms. That is the only hope I have now after all what happened to us over the past 14 months..

Can't say I am still Optimistic as I was a year ago, but I still have a lonely hope, and I cant afford to lose  it as well.

747) Mohaly ::: Round Thirty Six !

My birthday this year comes in a "mon3ataf tareekhy" in my life -and in our beloved Egypt as well - while facing many challenges in being myself again, riding through many disappointments on the personal level and making use of many achievements on the professional level.

My wishes this year are mainly to be forgiven...
First and most important... I am seeking forgiveness from Allah, I feel and know that I wasn't really a good Muslim during the past period. I do really seek His mercy and forgiveness, and His help in being a better person.. I really want this more than anything in the world now.
Second ... I am seeking forgiveness from my old & gold friends whom I wasn't really giving the appropriate time and care as I should be. I was completely focusing on my career, but now I promise them I will be there for them.
Third ... I am seeking forgiveness from all those whom I had un-intentionality hurt or caused them any pain. I never planned to do that, and I am not perfect, and will never be.
Fourth ... I hope that I can forgive those who really caused me pain whether they intended to or not. There are some scars inside me, but I know it can be healed with time.

Other than forgiveness .. I wish to keep and build on the success I had in my career, AND asking God to help me find -this year- my life partner, someone who can really understand me and feel me, and vice-versa. Someone who is looking to construct not distruct. Someone serious enough to know what is marriage, and loose enough to know how to enjoy life.

I wish that God will bless Egypt as well, and to remember this date as a date that we will always be proud of....a date for breaking our fear and starting change from within. We have waited so long for this date, and it is about time to solidify together to achieve our goals of a having a better Egypt.

Sorry for the long wishes, but I like sharing with you. This blog has become a second home to me, and you do really support me more than you can imagine.

728) Money, Energy & Time !

Money, Energy, & Time are 3 major components in the success and achievement of our goals. We try to have them together, but there is always something missing in each stage of your life:

School age: You Have Time + Energy, & No Money
Working Age: You Have Money + Energy, & No Time
Old age: You Have Time + Money, but no Energy

You'd better make the best of the components that you already have or else you will end up losing in all the stages.

650) Personal ::: "Being Myself" on my Birthday!!

Today is my Birthday, I am officially in my mid 30s; i.e. Biologically have lived half my life (wel 2a3mar beyad Allah). It's a scary feeling. When I look back and see what I have did, missed, and achieved, I can say that I'm satisfied with the whole experience, but I gotta put more effort to build on what I have done, & try to catch up with what I missed.

The most important thing that in all these years (since mid 70s), I have succeeded in being sincere in all my feelings & actions whether personally or professionally. My biggest achievement is that I don't hate, envy, or wish any harm to anyone, and I hope that it is vice versa. If anyone reading this post, and has anything against me, please let me know, and I am apologizing in advance.

I launched this blog in Feb 2007 so there were 2 documented birthdays in 2008, 2009, let's see my wishes and how realistic they were.

Birthday Wishes 2008
On my birthday, I am asking God to keep my friends & family safe, happy, and successful, and close to each other.
Mohaly
That is an ongoing wish... I guess that is going in the right direction so far.

Birthday Wishes 2009
I wish that this year I can make the right balance between spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional targets, it is about time, and to be able to make more positive difference with more number of people.
Big Fat Zero in 2009, I just made it worse (mental 90%, and the rest 10%), but thank God by the end of 09 and start of 2010, I woke up and working hard to make this happen, and I am feeling much better...so this has to be accomplished in 2010 by hook or crook.
I wish that Egypt will at least stop and realize that we were going backwards, and start PLANNING for the future even if it is late.
No comment (seems that I was stoned when I wrote that)!
I wish that my friends and this blog readers still like and support me as they have always done, and I wish someday I make them proud of this friendship..
I can't answer that, but I always felt your love and support although the majority of this blog readers and followers have never met or talked to me in person....and I do honestly love u all, u r my virtual family who help me in overcoming my chronic loneliness :)
Mohaly

So my wish in the year 35 is to succeed in "Being Myself".... It is a milestone year, and I gotta make the best out of it In-Shaa-Allah.

600) Tribute to Life & Death; Tooti & Didi !

For those who joined the blog after the 500th post, I do dedicate every 100 post to someone.

This time I am dedicating it to 2 people who are very much related but have never seen each other. Actually one of them has just arrived right after the other left. I am dedicating this post to my grandma "mama didi" who left us in 2009 to a better world, and to my lovely niece "tooti" (nour) who arrived in 2009 too.

Didi and Nour are very close to me, and I have been wondering about the timing of their leaving and arrival. Is it a message from God to tell us that there will always be compensation someway, somehow, or it is just pure coincidence?!

In all cases I am always remembering my grandma, and LOVING the feeling of the uncle. Nour is a VERY fussy baby who needs 25 hours attention per day. Her father now is in Saudi, so I am her "Acting Father" now, and that is a new experience for me especially with such a young age. The good thing that I am the one whom she smile to the most, and we already have our song and dance :) I treat her as if she is 1 year old and she is less than 2 months old!

God Bless Nour and Rest Didi's soul in Heaven.

P.S. in the picture, I was so tired from pampering Noor all day on weekend, so we spontaneously took a nap together, and my sister couldn't pass the moment without capturing it :)

537) The Curious Case of Life!

Couple of weeks ago I have watched the Curious Case of Benjamin Button that won 3 Oscars, and was nominated for 13 (Brad Pitt should have won the Acting Award). It is really one of the most beautiful and meaningful films I have seen in the 21st century.

Other than the great production in all aspects (acting, directing, make-up,..etc), the most important is the hidden question the author is asking; would it have been better to life our lives in reverse order, where we grow younger instead of growing older? If we were born old, then become younger every year, would life have been better? This is the real morale about the movie that was written 90 years ago!

My personal opinion is that it doesn't not the matter which direction is our life heading as much as we are making the best out of what we have. I guess the film supported that as well where it highlighted that the best part of our lives when wisdom meets action; i.e. in 30s & 40s, so let's make the best out of it.
What about you?

520) A milestone on my Birthday!

It is my birthday again! I am starting a new year filled with hope that I can build on the stuff I have achieved, and fix the stuff that I had gone wrong with.
I feel that I am starting not only a new year, but a new era in my life as well.

Last year was a very successful one on the mental level and I over achieved my targets, and established a reputable name in academic, training, and consulting, but on the other hand, I missed on emotional targets; friends, and starting a family.

I wish that this year I can make the right balance between spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional targets, it is about time, and to be able to make more positive difference with more number of people.

I wish that Egypt will at least stop and realize that we were going backwards, and start PLANNING for the future even if it is late.

I wish that my friends and this blog readers still like and support me as they have always done, and I wish someday I make them proud of this friendship..

Lots of wishes but it my birthday bardo, so I gotta have some :)

486) Zaman Wana Soghayar!

I dont know why, but this song is overwhelming me these days....
begad yaretni fedelt soghayar!
Mohaly (in the Mid 1970s)

345) 2007 Milestone!

Everyone of us should sit with him/herself tonight for an hour or 2 and think about what did he/she achieve or miss in 2007 and what he/she wanna change/keep and achieve in 2008.

The best celebration is to know that your overall score in life is getting better not worse even if it is worse in some parts. The secret of satisfaction is that you should deeply believe that you are good but can be better. Balance your spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional needs, and you will be granted happiness and satisfaction.

May Allah make our best days, our last days in our lives, and grant us all "a good closure" in donya, and "placement in heaven" in akhra.

Kol Sana Wentom game3an bekheer, and I love you all even if you don't :)

310) The Sex Pyramid

Couple of days ago, i got a question about sex education specially with teens and twenties... I remembered a nice article written 2 years ago by Janice Crouse about the Sex Education thruogh introducting the sex pyramid (like Moslow hierarchy keda :) that I saw as the best answer to this controversial question..I thought I should share the part about the sex pyramid with you to see whether you agree that this is the right way to discuss sex with younger generations or not.
Mohaly
The foundation is "Values." Parents must communicate their values clearly, unequivocally, often and effectively. They should be confident in the knowledge that Biblical values do not go "out of style" or become out-dated. All truth is God's truth and regardless of cultural trends, values remain true and reliable compasses to guide believers through all the situations of life. Religious values of respect, dignity and honor are universal values that need to be applied specifically to sexual behavior so that our boys learn to respect and honor girls, and girls learn dignity and self-respect so that they can effectively say "no."

The second step is "Relationships." Parents must communicate the importance of establishing a relationship of trust and respect before intimacy develops. Parents need to communicate basic principles about character development, honor and individual responsibility.
The third step is "Emotions." Young people are seldom aware of just how extensive is the emotional aspect of relationships - especially when sex is part of the mix. Parents can help their children develop emotional control and teach them to analyze their feelings. Parents need to focus on helping their children separate their emotions from their judgments and to be careful in getting emotionally involved before laying a foundation of trust and respect.
The fourth step is "Consequences." People today rarely understand the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases and even those who are aware of them think that they won't get one. In a similar manner, most people think that they are "mature" and they believe that their relationships will "last forever.
At the top of the sex pyramid is the mechanics of the sexual act -- the "birds and bees" aspect. This actually should receive the least attention because it is the easiest part of sexual interaction to explain and understand, though, ironically, comprehensive sex education tends to focus on the biology of sexuality rather than the foundation on which sex is built.

306) Dark Side of Egypt II - Mokhadarat!

I cant talk about the dark side in our generation without mentioning the scary increase of drug usage and addiction in the young (18-25) & mature youth (26-40) segments.

How many guys died from an overdose in the few couple of years? How many homes were torn apart because of addiction? How much money did the country loose on buying & healing, in addition to the waste of production time and energy? The questions are endless, and the sadness is overwhelming!!

Couple of days ago I read in Al-Ahram that 10% of the youth are drug ADDICTS, in addition to millions of users in different forms (Hash, ..etc). Imagine we have about 4 million drug addicts between 18 and 40!!

1. Why did it dramatically increase?

2. How can we contain it?

3. How can we (non-addicts) avoid it?

God Bless us all,
Mohaly

P.S. Thanks Embee for the video!
