All my generation (Mid 70s) will surely remember our high school time hero "Raafat El Haggan" (Refaat El Gammal) or David Samhoun (Jack Biton). I used to LOVE this series, and even open the TV 15 mins earlier just in case it starts early (u know Egyptian TV timings). I really miss those days...I rarely get excited now about something, specially on TV!

By the way he died on 1982, i.e 3 years before the novel, and 6 years before the TV series.

312) The Kingdom of the Arab "Republic" of Egypt!

Since the start of history, Egypt has been ruled by a Governor, King, Wali, Sultan, Khedive...different names for a monarchy system, but since 54 years it has been ruled by a president. I was wondering when the 1952 "revolution" kicked the British out of Egypt, and kept the Kingdom for 1 whole year, why did they turned it into a republic then? and was it really the best way to rule Egypt?

Do you think that Egyptian people prefer to be ruled by a king or a president? Do they prefer a monarchy system or republican system? and Why?

P.S. I know that some of you (may be Gypo) will say and what is the difference, at the end the King and the President have absolute power, and they pass the thrown to their kids :)

310) The Sex Pyramid

Couple of days ago, i got a question about sex education specially with teens and twenties... I remembered a nice article written 2 years ago by Janice Crouse about the Sex Education thruogh introducting the sex pyramid (like Moslow hierarchy keda :) that I saw as the best answer to this controversial question..I thought I should share the part about the sex pyramid with you to see whether you agree that this is the right way to discuss sex with younger generations or not.

The foundation is "Values." Parents must communicate their values clearly, unequivocally, often and effectively. They should be confident in the knowledge that Biblical values do not go "out of style" or become out-dated. All truth is God's truth and regardless of cultural trends, values remain true and reliable compasses to guide believers through all the situations of life. Religious values of respect, dignity and honor are universal values that need to be applied specifically to sexual behavior so that our boys learn to respect and honor girls, and girls learn dignity and self-respect so that they can effectively say "no."

The second step is "Relationships." Parents must communicate the importance of establishing a relationship of trust and respect before intimacy develops. Parents need to communicate basic principles about character development, honor and individual responsibility.

The third step is "Emotions." Young people are seldom aware of just how extensive is the emotional aspect of relationships - especially when sex is part of the mix. Parents can help their children develop emotional control and teach them to analyze their feelings. Parents need to focus on helping their children separate their emotions from their judgments and to be careful in getting emotionally involved before laying a foundation of trust and respect.

The fourth step is "Consequences." People today rarely understand the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases and even those who are aware of them think that they won't get one. In a similar manner, most people think that they are "mature" and they believe that their relationships will "last forever.

At the top of the sex pyramid is the mechanics of the sexual act -- the "birds and bees" aspect. This actually should receive the least attention because it is the easiest part of sexual interaction to explain and understand, though, ironically, comprehensive sex education tends to focus on the biology of sexuality rather than the foundation on which sex is built.

309) Suggestion ::: New National Anthem!

The national anthem is something that should make a direct connection with your heart, and directly relate to your mind. I don't think that Beladi Beladi is valid anymore, and I strongly recommend the following song to be our new national anthem for our generation!
If you read the lyrics carefully (specially the highlited parts) and compare it with Life in Egypt, its people, and government in your mind, you will find it the best song that can replace our national anthem lyrics (but keeping the same tune of beladi beladi 3ashan bas ne7es eno nasheed watani!).

Has anyone got sick from the broken record statements that guys and girls use since 2ayam 3abdel 7alim till now!!

306) Dark Side of Egypt II - Mokhadarat!

I cant talk about the dark side in our generation without mentioning the scary increase of drug usage and addiction in the young (18-25) & mature youth (26-40) segments.

How many guys died from an overdose in the few couple of years? How many homes were torn apart because of addiction? How much money did the country loose on buying & healing, in addition to the waste of production time and energy? The questions are endless, and the sadness is overwhelming!!

Couple of days ago I read in Al-Ahram that 10% of the youth are drug ADDICTS, in addition to millions of users in different forms (Hash, ..etc). Imagine we have about 4 million drug addicts between 18 and 40!!

1. Why did it dramatically increase?

2. How can we contain it?

3. How can we (non-addicts) avoid it?

Even if it is not as happy as before, I still LOVE EID....everyone is happy..children at their peak...and people wake up early (ya ret tool el sana), meet, SMILE...why cant we be like that all year?!!!

My home overlooks the Eid Prayer Area, and I experience a Maseera to the Mosque (prob. the only maseera in Egypt that you can perform without being busted!)

I have always loved the Eid El Fitr more than Eid El Adha, may be because I experience Ramadan before but the other Eid comes after Hajj (which Inshaa-Allah I will be there this year)..

This year's it coincides with my little sister's birthday, so it is double feast (and tab3an double gift!)

300) The 300th Post: Supplication to Allah!

Allah does not expect perfection from us. What is expected of us is that when we make mistakes we move from the state of disobedience, return to Allah in repentance and seek refuge in the cover of mercy that He's provided for us. If we take too long and not seek refuge in the mercy of Allah and don't ask for forgiveness, our souls become used to the sins and even ruined by them.

In these Holy nights of Qadr, I ask Allah the Almighty to:

1. Grant us the pure soul (nafs) that drives us to obey Him and love doing good deeds.

2. Grant us the strong & healthy body that we can use in carrying on His duties.

3. Grant us the mature mind that drives us to develop and make a difference in this world.

4. Grant us the loving heart that drives us to care about each other and live in peace.

Allahom enak 3afo, 3'afour, to7eb el 3afo, fa3fo 3anna.

It seems that the ones who launched the rumors about Muabark's death had a long term plan of killing him softly. The President has been in DAILY public activities in Cairo, governorates, Lybia, Jordan, Saudi...since the start of Ramadan and he is 80!

296) The Dark Side of Egypt I - Gawaz 3urfi!

Since I started a series called BrightSide of Egypt talking about good people and stuff in our generation, I thought of creating balance and start the DarkSide of Egypt too. Hopefully the bright side posts will outnumber the DarkSide ones :)

The first topic and one of the most serious DarkSide issues in our generation is the 3urfi Marriage where any 2 can just write a paper and keep a copy in a hypocrite way for just having sex (sorry for being blunt). It is the Quran (Al-baqara) which said that the Hypocrites will be in the lowest level in Hell (a3ozo Bellah). So even those who have a "western" boy-girl friend style are not as worse as those who are 3urfi married coz they are fooling themselves, the society, and think that they are "fooling" Allah.

I know that there are many reasons that have led to this situation including financial, economic, social, and religious awareness as well. But when you read the following part of a study, you will know why I decided to dedicate my first post about the DarkSide for it.

Continuing with this rate will not only be a problem but will be a catastrophe as it act as an avalanche that will swap many of the long-lived Egyptian characteristics along the way the least of which will be the family values.

290) The Bright Side of Egypt - Part I

I was, am, and will be optimistic about the future of this country. I will keep on giving my thought, time, and effort for taking part in its positive change. For those who still have hope and working or even supporting us, I am dedicating a group of posts "The Bright Side of Egypt" about young Egyptians some of them are my friends, or I know personally, or I dont know at all. What is important is that we all share the same vision of developing this country and the whole Arab and Muslim communities in-shaa Allah...

One day, when everyone can clearly see the light, you will say, these people weren't kidding, they really believed in their duty as Egyptians and as Muslims to do a positive change even -as i always say- if we didn't see it in our life time.

I am listing the people -including myself- I know personally or I have worked with, who gave, and still giving a lot of their time and effort to make our community a better place in donya and even akhra. I am sure that there are 100s of us everywhere and some day - not far- we will make the difference.
