Earth Hour will next take place on TODAY March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm, local time. I am participating and will ask my evening class to have the lights off.
2,398 cities, towns and municipalities in 83 countries have already committed to VOTE EARTH for Earth Hour 2009, as part of the worlds first global election between Earth and global warming.
I urge all my blog followers and readers to turn off the lights tonight from 8:30pm to 9:30pm their local time.

Earth Hour is an annual international event created by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund), held on the last Saturday of March, that asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change. It was pioneered by WWF Australia and the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007,and achieved worldwide participation in 2008.

جميل جداا ان السنة دى فيه وعى اكتر بالموضوع والاعلام اعلن عنه قبلها بفترة
ReplyDeleteكنت قريب فى مؤتمر دولى للكيمياء برغم انه مش تخصصى لكن المحاضر كان امريكى وكان بيتكلم عن تطوير مركبات كيميائية لتخزين الهيدروجين وثانى اكسيد الكربون
وقال معلومة بالنسبة لى كانت جديدة وهى ان 80% من محطات توليد الكهرباء فى امريكا تعتمد على احراق الفحم وان تطوير المركبات هيساعد على تخزين ثانى اكسيد الكربون الناتج عن الاحتراق تمهيدا لتخزينه فى الارض ولما الحاضرين ناقشوه فى الاضرار اللى ممكن يسببها للتربة والمياه الجوفيه
قال انه بعد 50 سنة فيه مدن مهدده بالفناء وان الهدف انقاذ المدن وحماية الارواح وبعدين نبقى نفكر فى اضرار ثانى اكسيد الكربون!!!
ولما الحاضرين اعتبروا اجابته غير مرضية
قال ان هو شخصيا من رأيه التحول للمحطات النووية زى ما حصل فى اوروبا
وبعدين امريكا نفسها لم توقع على برتوكول طوكيو حسب معلوماتى!!
غريب جداا موقف بلد زى امريكا يدعى الاهتمام بالبيئة والارض !!
عامة جميل ان مصر شاركت لاننا محتاجين وعى اكبر بهذه الامور.. وياريت كانوا خصصوا ولو 10 دقائق فى المدارس لشرح الموضوع للطلبة
احنا محتاجين نعرف ونتعلم مش نطبق بدون فهم والا هيكون زى ما احد السيدات قالت انا هعمل كده علشان اوفر فى فاتورة الكهرباء

ReplyDeleteIt is more of a statement Omar for earth rather than actual difference (what we can save is less than 0.03% of the year consumption).
ReplyDeleteyes Jannah, it is a shame that the main source of pollution is the not taking the enough measures and cooperation to stop or minimize it.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that kills me that Europeans care very much about their environment to the extent that they are moving most of their source of pollutions (factories) to the 3rd world, i.e. us :((( May be Agrium was an exception, but when will we have the lives of next generations in a higher priority than money?!

ReplyDeleteHi,lots of people really didn't know what was going on& what's meant by the earth hour but the moment they heard that they should turn off lights for an hour they did....the question now is:As we respond when we are told about such things so why we're standing still in our place?

ReplyDeleteThe part in your comment about the individual impact and the difference that an individual can make, reminded of Obama's speech "Fired Up! Ready to Go!" in Manassas, Virginia. When Obama reminded the people of how one voice can change a room and how that change can cascade to change a city, then a state, then a country and, eventually, the world.
