In Washington DC, at a Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007, this man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 60 minutes. During that time, approximately 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After about 3 minutes, a middle-aged man noticed that there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then he hurried on to meet his schedule.
About 4 minutes later: The violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

At 6 minutes: A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.
At 10 minutes:A 3-year old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time. This action was repeated by several other children, but every parent - without exception - forced their children to move on quickly.

At 45 minutes:The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.
After 1 hour: He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. There was no recognition at all.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a Stradivarius violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold-out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each to sit and listen to him play the same music.
This is a true story. Joshua Bell, playing incognito in the DC Metro Station, was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities.

Questions:
1)In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
If so, do we stop to appreciate it?
2)Do we recognise talent in an unexpected context?

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made . . .
How many other things are we missing as we rush through life?

ReplyDeleteSecond of all.. this post is just amazing bo7lezing.. we do take alot of grand blessings for granted 3ashan we are too in=a-hurry in life.
The most evident example that comes to my mind: Sunrise and sunsets.. begad these two daily beautiful miracles hardly go noticed in our urban life styles :(
Thanks for the inspiration maan!
Thank You gjoe :))
ReplyDeleteI get upset if I didnt catch sunrise on my day-off or vacations. It gives me a weird positive energy.
So touching and just came in time :)
ReplyDeleteBTW , thanks for the white colored , positive and optimistic theme :)
Yasmminaz: In these days, I need anything to keep me positive even if my blog theme..
ReplyDeleteAfala Yatafakkaroon fe3lan .. contemplation somehow became weird these days, amongst many other essential things that are missing!
ReplyDeleteFor me perceiving beauty doesn't need a time even if we are in a rush.
ReplyDeleteI love wake up early in winter & walk in the wet streets beside the Nile, I love the smell of the morning. Sometimes I feel very happy from anything even from a tree on the streets. For example, I have a favorite tree in the Opera garden when I go there I feel relief penetrating my veins, I don’t know the reason as it is a very regular tree, but I think if we see the beautiful side of everything & neglect its ugly one, perceiving beauty will be a habit

ReplyDeleteHy, Mohaly!
ReplyDeleteGood Morning, or... And I write to you, that’s why: your post – Rushing you life – A Matter of Perception!
I don’t slleep 3 days; and sorry the errors, but... go to the top of your post, and you say:
‘this man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 60 minutes. During that time, approximately 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.’
and what the Spirit say, by you fingers, your mind, your reflection? See what you writted: ‘... played six ... about 60 min... approximately 2000 ...’, and, in the end ...
’one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written’ - ‘... the most intricate pieces ...’,
and here, the ‘intricate’, is ‘what the Saint Spirit make with you/ by you’! See: I have 4 book’s in my heart: Corão, Bible: old and new, and the book I write;
and when I read you post, imediatly burn my heart, by the 70’s virgin around 70 nations ( oposittion ) in the old testament and the human error’s what saying today ( sorry my English ),
and the Prophet. Mohammed, by you write: ‘... approximately 2000...’ ( Marcos 5.13 ) ‘... played six ... about 60 ...’; Prophet Jeremiah say ‘... 60 men ...’ ( Jr52.25 )!
Here I stop, and request for you, write about your post, in my blog; with a link; but I write in Portuguese, and I don’thave many friends Muçulmanos/Muslim; but I’m in my Cristian heart;
and I write ( in the futur : I’ll write? I dont now – sorry, but you understand me ) around the Time: the 6; the 60; the 2000 and the mental promiscuity of theses nations, today!
The Endless Time ( Is right? ) Who listen ( to me? ) Sorry; but my English is very, very, terrible! In the last 4 year’s, I writted my book, In now I have a blog!
Sorry, and thank you by your time!
Regard!
Henrique Gabriel
