If you attended a serious meeting, and someone (let's say your manager) said: what we are doing is a mental masturbation! What will you understand and how will you react?
I remember this word & this person, for the first time to hear this word i didn't get exactly what does it means but after that i decided not to pay any attention for such mentality, life is more simple and doesn't really need such expressions.
I don't agree on the word since I heard it from my ex boss but I think that the act itself is very common in our communities : Intellectual activity that serves no practical purpose :| when you talk to people about, for example luck of organisation, they agree with you about the fact and they know that it's the cause of all cahotic situations that we face on daily basis and they also know that the only solution to get out of this is organisation and real respect of others but they don't do anything or even try to make it true. I wish I could have a magical stick to change this mentality:(
I know the person too tamer hehe, i was put in the situation as well mohaly ;)...
Sounds insulting yet its not, but i feel its nonprofessional.
We have the issue in Egypt of being over manged and under led, and such communications even though none productive could still lead a joiner into the senior footsteps, and improve the thinking of day to day decision making process.
Masturbation is a phase in everyone's life that help us understand something about our anatomy its not unproductive unless you over do it.
the person who uses such a term is one who likes to shock/impress people with complicated expressions, without necessarily having thought of the full depth of it. i'm guessing who that person is; if mohaly, khateeb and tamer know him/her, then i definitely know him/her :) and if i'm right, then the profile definitely matches the description ;)

where the hell did you come up with this word!
ReplyDeleteIf we match it with what other common meanings, I guess it means "any pleasurable but unproductive mental activity".

actually what you said yasmine is a very good and clever way to describe it.
ReplyDeleteBut as Tamer said, is it a word to be used and let us think about?
P.S. it took a lot of our thinking time, i.e it caused us mental masturbation!
